Fennel Seed

Fennel is a herb with a pleasant smell and yellow flowers. It originates from the Mediterranean, but nowadays it grows all over the world in various countries. Fennel oil and dried seeds are used mainly to make medicines.
Fennel can be used for different digestive problems such as heartburn, bloating, intestinal gas, loss of appetite, colic in babies. Sometimes it is also used for respiratory tract infections, bronchitis, coughs, cholera, bedwetting, backache, and visual problems, it also helps to avoid snoring like Jublia
Breast-feeding women use fennel to increase the production of breast milk. Fennel also increases sex drive, eases the birthing process, and promotes menstruation.
Fennel powder neutralizes the effect of snakebites. Very often fennel is used as a laxative. It works due to certain chemicals it contains which are able to relax the colon and lower respiratory tract secretions.

Fennel seems to be safe for most adults and children if used in the amounts that can be found in food. There is lack of evidence that can prove its safety when used in medicinal amounts. Recently researchers have studied Colimil, a combination product for treatment of colic. This product contains fennel, German chamomile and lemon balm. This product proved to be safe in infants if it is used for no longer than one week.
However, fennel can result in some side effects such as allergic skin reactions. People allergic to carrot, celery, and mugwort should be careful when using fennel as they have a great risk of suffering from allergic to fennel. When applied to the skin, fennel can make it too sensitive to sunlight. So, it's recommended to wear sunblock, especially for light-skinned people.
Pregnant and breast-feeding women should be careful when using fennel, as little is known about the safety of this plant. People with hormone-sensitive conditions (breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, uterine fibroids, endometriosis) are prohibited to use fennel not to worsen the state.
